About Big Sandy Water Institute
More than two decades after its launch, the Big Sandy Water Institute continues to deliver a “recreational buffet” of outdoor experiences focused on water safety, environmental stewardship, and community connection. One of the biggest changes over time is access: thanks to strong local funding and partnerships, the program is now free to all participants—removing a barrier that existed when it began in 2002.
Originally developed through the Big Sandy Lake Association, the Institute brought together volunteers, educators, and community organizations with a shared mission: teach youth to safely enjoy and protect local waterways. With support from the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources and the Army Corps of Engineers, the program established its home at Sandy Lake Recreation Area, offering hands-on learning in kayaking, boating safety, and environmental awareness.
Today, under director Dani Johnson, the program continues to evolve while staying true to its roots. Students still explore local destinations, participate in fishing and safety programs, and engage in outdoor learning. New service projects and expanded partnerships ensure the Institute remains a dynamic, community-driven experience for the next generation.
