About Mille Lacs County

Welcome to Mille Lacs Energy Cooperative (MLEC), a member-owned, not-for-profit electric distribution cooperative proudly serving over 13,000 members across Aitkin, Crow Wing, and Mille Lacs counties. Our mission is to responsibly deliver reliable, competitively priced energy, along with services and products that meet the evolving needs of our members and communities. Founded in 1939 during the rural electrification movement inspired by the Rural Electrification Administration, MLEC began with just a few hundred members and a vision to bring power to underserved rural areas. Through decades of growth, strategic partnerships, and infrastructure expansion, we have grown to nearly 2,000 miles of line while maintaining our commitment to local service and community values. At MLEC, we operate under the Seven Cooperative Principles, ensuring democratic member control, equitable participation, and a strong commitment to education, cooperation, and community development. These principles guide everything we do—from maintaining dependable service to supporting local initiatives and sustainable growth. Today, Mille Lacs Energy Cooperative continues to power homes, farms, and businesses while building a stronger, more connected future for the communities we serve.
