About Lake Minnewawa Association

Founded in 1977, the Lake Minnewawa Association began as a grassroots effort to restore a lake suffering from severe environmental decline. Poor water clarity, excessive vegetation growth and deteriorating fish habitat threatened recreation and the overall health of Lake Minnewawa, prompting residents to organize and take action.

Over the decades, the association expanded far beyond its original restoration efforts. Members established water quality monitoring programs, supported fisheries improvement projects and promoted long-term lake stewardship through volunteer-driven conservation work. Notable projects include the loon nesting platform program designed to improve loon chick survival rates and a fish ladder project that helps spawning walleyes return upstream into the lake.

The association also supports youth outreach through programs like “Take a Kid Fishing Day” and brings the community together each summer during the annual LMA BBQ fundraiser at Bann’s Bar & Restaurant. Nearly 50 years later, the organization remains a strong example of community-led environmental stewardship dedicated to protecting Lake Minnewawa for future generations.
