About Friends of Rice Lake National Wildlife Refuge
The Friends of Rice Lake National Wildlife Refuge, established in 2002, quickly became a vital community partner supporting Rice Lake National Wildlife Refuge. Early efforts focused on building public engagement and honoring the refuge’s history, including hosting a Civilian Conservation Corps reunion that recognized the camp active at the refuge from 1939 to 1941.
The organization soon demonstrated its impact through tangible improvements, completing its first major project—a fishing dock at Mandy Lake—to enhance public access and recreation. At the same time, the Friends expanded educational and outreach opportunities by sponsoring a community photography contest and hosting the nationally recognized “Wild Sights” exhibit.
Through these initiatives, the Friends fostered community involvement, supported conservation efforts, and strengthened appreciation for the refuge’s natural beauty and wildlife.
