About Robert Harder

Robert Orvis Harder is a Minnesota native, decorated U.S. Air Force veteran, former retail executive, pilot, and author whose career spans military service, aviation, business leadership, and historical writing. Born on August 2, 1945, in Jackson, Mississippi, Harder graduated from McGregor High School in McGregor, Minnesota, in 1962 before earning a B.A. in Geography and Political Science from the University of Minnesota Duluth in 1966. As an AFROTC Distinguished Military Graduate, he was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the United States Air Force.


Harder trained as a navigator and bombardier and served as a B-52 navigator during the Vietnam War, flying 145 combat missions under Operation Arc Light. His service earned numerous military decorations, including the Air Medal with six Oak Leaf Clusters and the Air Force Outstanding Unit Award with Combat “V.” After separating from the Air Force in 1970 as a captain, Harder continued his passion for aviation by earning multiple FAA certifications, including commercial pilot and flight instructor ratings.


Following his military career, Harder built a successful career in retail management, working with Target during its early growth and later serving as a vice president for Montgomery Ward in Chicago. Today, he is a full-time writer focusing on military history, aviation, and early American frontier life, while remaining active in several aviation and historical organizations.
